Winter Fly Fishing Report

Happy New Year to all from Fish Goat Guide Service.

I hope everyone has been taking advantage of the recent warm temps and improved water flows. Here is a quick update on our local waters:

Boone area fishing report:
Improved water levels have fish moving in all the area waters. Delayed Harvest waters are in full swing with fish becoming more selective as pressure increases. Now is a good time to find some open water. Our Boone area fly fishing guides report success using dry dropper rigs in slower such as a parachute adams with a midge emerger dropper below. Small hatches can be found on our area small streams with nice dry fly action in the afternoons.

Tailwater Fishing Report:

Watauga River Fishing Report:
Our Watauga River Guides have reported excellent fishing on the Watauga tailrace recently. The word on fly selection is small Blue Wing Olives, dark midges and scuds. Special attention should be paid to slower water and back eddies for selective trout sipping on top. Streamers have also been productive with a sinking line.

South Holston River Fishing Report:
High water has returned and with it a stellar high water bite. Remember to check with the TVA for generation schedule. Midges, BWOS and scuds have been productive. Plenty of weight and a good drift are crucial to angler success. Respect wild fish and avoid the redds. Obey South Holston River closures for the good of the fishery.
